European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
